Any concerned Kansans out there?

There is a bill being considered by committee in the Kansas Senate that would make it illegal for dairy producers to label their products as hormone-free. I haven’t really researched it, but on the surface, it certainly seems that this is the work of lobbying by Big Agriculture. The Kansas City Food Circle has two blog posts about the issue: here and here. If you are a Kansan and want to contact your local politicians, you can do so here.

Your instincts are right on target. Google for “pennsylvania dairy labeling” or “ohio dairy labeling“. The so-called “absence labeling” restrictions that prevent phrases like “synthetic hormone free” or “rGBH free” were enacted in Pennsylvania, and they’re close in Ohio. Luckily people are waking up to it. There was such an outcry in PA that the Governor stepped in and rescinded the rules, and Ohio’s had a big grassroots campaign to stop it as well.

Consumers are supposedly too dumb and too easily confused. The milk is supposedly indistinguishable in either case. Weak, weak, weak…
